Park Güell Upper Entrance: Carretera del Carmel
The Park Güell upper entrance is at Carretera del Carmel 23. It is the arrival point for Bus 24, all guided tours, taxis, and the park’s shuttle from Alfons X metro. It places you at the western side of the Monumental Zone, level with the Austria Gardens and a short walk from the Main Terrace — without the uphill climb of the main Carrer d’Olot gate. It is the recommended entrance for visitors arriving by bus, taxi, or tour group.
Most visitors assume there is one Park Güell entrance: the famous main gate on Carrer d’Olot with the fairy-tale pavilions and Dragon Staircase. There are three. The upper entrance on Carretera del Carmel is deliberately quieter, better served by public transport, and the starting point for virtually all guided tours — yet many independent visitors end up at the main gate by default and wonder why they had a longer walk than expected.
This guide explains what the upper entrance is, how to reach it, and when it is the better choice.

What Is the Upper Entrance?
The upper entrance (Carretera del Carmel 23) is the western access point to Park Güell’s Monumental Zone. It sits at a higher elevation than the main Carrer d’Olot gate, placing visitors close to the Austria Gardens and Main Terrace level — without the Dragon Staircase climb. It is the entrance used by all guided tours and bus arrivals.
The upper entrance at Carretera del Carmel 23 is on the western edge of the park, at a higher elevation than the main Carrer d’Olot gate. It sits adjacent to the coach and taxi parking area and is used by:
- All organised guided tours (this is the standard meeting point for every third-party tour operator)
- Bus 24 and bus V19 passengers — the bus stop is directly across the road
- Taxis and ride-shares — the only taxi rank at Park Güell is here
- Visitors using the free shuttle from Alfons X metro station
- Coach groups with pre-booked Zona Bus parking
It is also the best access point for:
- Visitors wanting to reach the Main Terrace with minimal climbing
- Wheelchair users and visitors with reduced mobility — accessible routes connect from this entrance level with the Monumental Zone
- Anyone planning to see the Austria Gardens first and the Dragon Staircase on exit
What This Entrance Does NOT Have
The Carretera del Carmel entrance does not have the iconic Porter’s Lodge pavilions, the mosaic palm-leaf iron gate, or the Dragon Staircase at its entry level. If arriving here, you enter the park mid-level — you can still see the Dragon Staircase, but you approach it from above or by walking around to it from inside the Monumental Zone, rather than arriving at it as the first thing you see.
For visitors who want the classic “postcard first impression” — walking through the gingerbread pavilions and looking up at El Drac — the Carrer d’Olot main gate is the better entry point, then exit via Carretera del Carmel.
How to Get to the Upper Entrance
By Bus (Recommended)
Bus 24 from Plaça Catalunya or Passeig de Gràcia. Alight at “Ramiro de Maeztu – CN Catalunya” or “CAP Larrard”. The stop is directly across from the entrance. Journey time from Plaça Catalunya: approximately 25–35 minutes.
Bus V19 from Sagrada Família (walk 5 min west to Passeig de Sant Joan / Carrer de Còrsega). Alight at “Ramiro de Maeztu – CN Catalunya”. Journey time: approximately 28 minutes.
Hop-on Hop-off Bus Turístic (Blue Route): The Park Güell stop on Avinguda de la Mare de Déu de Montserrat is approximately a 10-minute walk from the Carretera del Carmel entrance via Avinguda de Pompeu Fabra.
By Taxi or Ride-Share
Typical fares to Carretera del Carmel:
| From | Fare | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Plaça Catalunya | €10–€14 | ~10 min |
| Sagrada Família | €8–€12 | ~7–10 min |
| Gothic Quarter | €12–€18 | ~12–15 min |
By Free Shuttle from Alfons X Metro
The free park shuttle runs from Alfons X station (Metro L4 Yellow Line) to the Carretera del Carmel entrance. Frequency varies — check with the entrance staff on arrival for current schedule.
To reach Alfons X from the city centre: take L5 (Blue Line) to Diagonal, transfer to L4 (Yellow Line), alight at Alfons X (1 stop).
On Foot from Metro Lesseps
From Lesseps station (L3 Green Line), follow green Park Güell signs uphill via Carrer de Sant Josep de la Muntanya. This route leads to the Passatge de Sant Josep de la Muntanya entrance, not Carretera del Carmel — to reach Carretera del Carmel instead, continue past the escalator entrance and follow the park perimeter round to the western side. Allow 20–25 minutes total.
Meeting Your Guided Tour at Carretera del Carmel
If you have booked a third-party guided tour, your meeting point is almost certainly Carretera del Carmel 23. Specifically, your guide will be in the esplanade between the taxi stand and the park gate — not at the main Carrer d’Olot entrance and not at any other location.
Several tour operators use different coloured signs or umbrellas. Common identifiers mentioned in booking confirmations include:
- A green sign (Walks / Devour Tours)
- A red or burgundy umbrella
- A sign with the operator or guide company name
Arrive 15 minutes before your tour start time. Multiple tour groups typically congregate in the same esplanade at peak times, so look specifically for your operator’s identifier rather than following random groups.
Warning: Missing your guided tour at this entrance because you went to the main gate is one of the most common visitor errors at Park Güell. Always read your booking confirmation for the specific meeting point address.
Upper Entrance vs. Main Gate: Which Is Better?
Main gate (Carrer d’Olot): best for the full arrival sequence — Porter’s Lodge pavilions, Dragon Staircase, El Drac first. Upper entrance (Carretera del Carmel): best for wheelchair users, bus and taxi arrivals, and guided tour groups. If you want the dramatic first impression, use the main gate. If you want efficiency or accessibility, use the upper entrance.
| Upper Entrance (Carretera del Carmel 23) | Main Gate (Carrer d’Olot 7) | |
|---|---|---|
| Architectural entrance experience | Functional — no pavilions or dragon staircase at entry | Iconic — Porter’s Lodge pavilions and Dragon Staircase immediately visible |
| Walk from bus/taxi | Minimal — bus stop directly opposite | 5–15 minutes uphill from bus stops |
| Guided tours | All third-party tours meet here | Official park tours only |
| Wheelchair access | Best option — level with Monumental Zone | Accessible, but involves more movement to main landmarks |
| Reaching the terrace | Short walk from entrance level | Must climb Dragon Staircase and Hypostyle Room |
| Crowds at gate | Less congested | Busiest gate, especially 10:00–15:00 |
Best strategy for first-time visitors: Enter at Carretera del Carmel (especially if arriving by bus or taxi), see the Austria Gardens and Main Terrace first, work down through the Hypostyle Room and Dragon Staircase, and exit via the Carrer d’Olot main gate to appreciate the pavilions from inside before leaving.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the upper entrance the same as the main entrance?
No. The main entrance is at Carrer d’Olot 7 and leads directly to the Dragon Staircase. The upper entrance at Carretera del Carmel 23 is a separate gate on the western side of the park, closer to the Main Terrace and Austria Gardens.
Do all three ticket types work at the upper entrance?
Yes. Standard admission tickets, Museum combo tickets, and guided tour entry are all valid at Carretera del Carmel.
Why do guided tours meet at Carretera del Carmel instead of the main gate?
It is less congested, has better bus and taxi access, and places groups at the terrace level of the Monumental Zone — allowing guides to start at the Austria Gardens or Main Terrace and work downwards rather than fighting up through the most crowded entrance.
Can I park near the upper entrance?
The coach parking area at Carretera del Carmel is reserved for pre-booked group vehicles only, not private cars. The nearest public car park is BSM Travessera de Dalt, approximately 400 metres away.
Is the upper entrance accessible for wheelchair users?
Yes — it is the most accessible entrance to Park Güell. The path from the entrance to the Monumental Zone highlights is relatively level. Request wheelchair assistance in advance at parkguell@bsmsa.cat.
Is there a ticket office at the upper entrance?
No. Tickets must be purchased online in advance. A QR code scanner at the gate accepts mobile tickets directly from your phone.
